I am not a book reviewer but What is the What is a magnificent and brilliant book. It’s beautiful and tragic, funny and devastating.
For me the power of this book lies in its truth. Although it’s categorized as fiction it’s based on the true stories of Sudanese refugees. Valentino Achak Deng, Moses and Achor Achor are real people not literary characters. They saw their villages destroyed and their families brutally killed. They walked hundreds of miles through the desert with little food or water. They were hunted by soldiers and sold into slavery. They survived to face further heartache, yet continued to live with hope and gratitude, questioning their place and purpose in the world.
The proceeds of all sales of this book go to The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation to assist Sudanese in America and Sudan. I want to buy it for everyone I care about. So if you are one of those people, you might receive this as a Christmas gift. And the next time we’re tempted to complain about traffic or work or rude people or gas prices we might instead think of something larger than our little problems. We’ll throw our hands up in the air, or make some other appropriate gesture, laugh and say “What the hell. It could be worse. Let’s get a pizza.”
