Ukrainian people are known for their craft of colorful and intricately decorated Easter eggs called pysanky. My mother taught my sister and I how to make these eggs when we were children and the three of us continue this tradition today.
The eggs are decorated by applying hot beeswax to an egg with a stylus. When the wax is applied to the white egg, that part of the design will be white. The egg is then dyed in the next lightest color you choose and wax is applied again and so on. When you are done with the design, the wax is removed using a candle flame.
I made the eggs shown above this year.
This is what I do when I’m not working, filling out financial aid forms, cleaning cat vomit or watching Lost.
To quote from Ukrainian Easter Eggs and How to Make Them, “…it is a harmonious and satisfying experience.”
